It was rumored last month that John Cena could be feuding with WWE Champion: Jinder Mahal upon his return to Smackdown Live on July 4th. This made sense considering the dynamics of their characters. Cena plays the role of the American patriot and Jinder is using an anti-American gimmick.
WWE has chosen to continue the feud between Jinder and Randy Orton. They will face off in a Punjabi Prison match for the WWE Championship at Battleground.
So who will Cena be feuding with upon his return?
Dave Meltzer on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio (subscribe here) speculated that Cena could be feuding with Rusev upon his return. Rusev is ready to return but WWE creative has had nothing for him for the past few weeks.
Take with a grain of salt because it is only speculation. This would make sense though when you look at the landscape of Smackdown Live. Jinder and Orton are paired off. Shinsuke Nakamura vs Baron Corbin, Sami Zayn vs Mike Kanellis and Kevin Owens vs AJ Styles were all teased this week on Smackdown Live. That doesn’t leave many options open for Cena unless he joins one of these feuds.

An easy decision WWE could make would be Cena vs Rusev at Battleground.
