4) The Story Of When Vince Tried To Sabotage The UFC
Chael Sonnen tells the story of Vince McMahon trying to sabotage the UFC on his podcast: ‘You’re Welcome With Chael Sonnen‘. The UFC was running their hit show: ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ right after RAW would air on Monday Nights. Vince had an issue with the show being advertised during RAW because he felt like it was diminishing his product and he was also worried that fans would stop watching the ‘scripted’ show and instead watch the real fighting in the octagon.
Chael tells the story:
“So Vince is saying to Dana privately, ‘Why would anybody watch my scripted show when they can just wait till it’s over to watch your real show. Stop advertising to my audience.’ And Dana shot with him and goes, ‘Vince, I’m on Spike, you’re on Spike. That’s where it ends. Who Spike decides to run the marketing and the advertising and to piggyback off of, man, it’s got nothing to do with me. And Vince again puts it on Dana and says, ‘Do not advertise your show during my show again.
That week, Vince McMahon contacts Mike Goldberg [UFC Announcer] and he tells Mike Goldberg, ‘I will give you a hundred thousand dollars to no-call, no-show the UFC on Friday. So Goldberg doesn’t get to warn anybody. He just can’t show up and he can’t call in. He just needs to stick them without an announcer” (Source: BJPenn.com).
Goldberg refused the offer. You would think that this would make Dana White angry. It actually drove him towards greater respect for Vince, who taught him that he has to be more ruthless. The UFC switched the Ultimate fighter show to a new night for the next season.
3) The Story Of When Vince Ribbed ‘The Coach’
Jonathan ‘The Coach’ Coachman told the hilarious story of him getting ribbed by Vince McMahon. Jonathan was running a football pool with all the employees of WWE. He says that one day, he was called into Vince’s office and there were police officers looking for him. Easily one of my favorite Vince McMahon stories of all-time.
Here is Coachman telling the story in an interview with Back Sports page:
“The real cops proceeded to tell Vince they’ve caught me in a gambling pool and we need to take him downtown. Vince got in my face, and he was an inch away from my nose. He was cursing, telling me my priorities were bad, and spending company time to run a gambling pool. This entire riff lasted 45 minutes. At the end of the office bit, the officer said it was $1,500 to get me out, and Vince said F-no, he’s on his own. They handcuffed me, and I asked if there was anything I could put over my face. Vince threw me a pair of sweaty gym shorts that got stuck on my face.
I walked out of the office and the first person I see is The Undertaker. He looks at me with shock, and it was so real because no one else was in on it except those people in the office”
How It Ended
Luckily for Coach, they showed some mercy on him about 10 minutes later:
“They walked me out, and all the fans could see me and they drove me about a mile down the road, and got a call on the radio that they had to come back to pick up something. They turn around, come back, and everyone’s there with Vince in front of everybody laughing their asses off. Greatest rib in the history of the business, and for about 10 minutes I literally walked to a place in the building and started crying. I thought my career was over. I thought how can I tell my dad I got fired over a $10 football pool” (Source: Back Sports Page).
