AJ Styles was recently a guest on E&C’s Pod Of Awesomeness. AJ spoke on a wide variety of topics about his wrestling career. One of these topics was about AJ recently winning the United States Championship at the live event in Madison Square Garden.

This was very surprising because we don’t often see titles change hands off television. There was a ton of speculation on the reason as to why there was a title change. AJ cleared things up on the podcast.
Here is what AJ said was the reason for the title change at MSG:
“There has been a lot of speculation I have heard on the internet as of why it actually happened. Was Kevin Owens hurt? Apparently now they are saying I have a DVD coming out, If there is a DVD, I didn’t know this was coming. I’d be happy to have one. I think it came down to, you know what, it is Madison Square Garden, let’s do it then. Let’s flip the Championship there. The last time we did it was like 2012 at least on the main roster. I think Joe and Finn Balor did it on NXT like two years ago. To me it is smart, because it is something that hasn’t been done in a long time but to do it at Madison Square Garden which everybody knows in WWE is a big deal. I think it was awesome and very clever. I loved it”
He continued:
“It was Vince’s call and nobody else’s. It was great”.
AJ also said it was a good business move because it keeps fans guessing for title changes at live events.
