Curtis Axel Comments On His Emotional Tribute To His Father: Mr. Perfect
Curtis Axel is the son of the legendary Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig. He is also the grandson of Larry ‘The Axe’ Hennig making him a third generation professional wrestler. As you likely know, his father passed away in 2003 and is known by some as one of the greatest wrestlers to ever lace up a pair of boots. In a recent interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Hennig talks about his father in a very candid way.

Curtis Axel says his career highlight is winning the intercontinental title back in 2013 because of his father’s legacy with the belt:
“By far, that was the greatest moment of my career thus far. When my dad won the IC title, he added a lot of prestige to the title. He’s one of the best IC champs of all time. So, for me, to win that on Father’s Day–of all days–made it even more special for me. That was something that meant so much to him, and it meant so much to me. When the referee handed me the title and I held it up, I couldn’t help but get emotional. I looked up at my father, almost in tears, and said, ‘Dad, I did it.’ My whole family was emotional over it back home, and it meant so much to me to hold the same title my dad held. That also put us in the history book together” (Source: SI.com).

On how he still pays tribute to his late father every time he steps into the ring:
“Unfortunately, I can’t walk down to the ring with my dad. I can’t be in a storyline with my dad, and I don’t have him around to help or guide me. But I have something no other generational kid has–I held the same title as my father. I think about my dad every time I step into the ring. People might not know this, but I pray to him before every match. Wrestling has actually been a way for me to heal after losing my father. It still feels like I’m with him” (Source: SI.com).
