Former WWE Writer Reveals Why Vince McMahon Had Damien Sandow Fail His Money In The Bank Cash-In

Damien Sandow won the Money in the Bank ladder match back in 2013 to guarantee himself a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. As we all know now, Sandow failed to cash-in the contract on (a weakened) John Cena and never became World Champion.

Sandow was the second person ever to fail to win the title with a cash-in (behind Cena) and was the first person ever to lose a cash-in match outright.

Former WWE writer: Kevin Eck recently wrote a piece for SportingNews.com. He shared some backstage stories about Money in the Bank, including one about Sandow.

According to Eck, the decision to win the briefcase came down to Sandow and Wade Barrett. Backstage writers and producers were split on who should win with both Sandow and Barrett having supporters. Vince would ultimately choose Sandow.

So what happened to Sandow? It turns out that there were intentions of making him World Champion but Vince eventually soured on him:

“After winning the MITB ladder match, Sandow began losing a lot more matches than he was winning. McMahon explained at the time that the losses wouldn’t hurt Sandow because he still had the briefcase. However, one of McMahon’s favorite sayings is “perception becomes reality.” The perception was that Sandow wasn’t world champion material, and McMahon eventually saw him that way as well”

Vince realized that he made a mistake and made the decision to have Sandow fail his cash-in attempt:

“When discussing Sandow at a booking meeting a few months after the MITB pay-per-view, McMahon said, “I think we went with the wrong guy.”

Sandow lost the cash-in and the rest is history.
