Shawn Michaels Explains Why He Will Never Come Back For Another Match

As noted prior, ‘the Heartbreak Kid’ Shawn Michaels was offered a match with AJ Styles at Wrestlemania 33 by the WWE. Unfortunately for fans, he turned down the match and chose to stay retired. This is something that upset a lot of fans who wanted to see this dream match take place.

So why did Shawn Michaels turn down the match against AJ Styles? Why does he continue to stick to his guns and stay retired after all these years?

Shawn Michaels on the Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast gave a pretty strong explanation on why he constantly turns down matches and wants to stay retired. He considers his career and story arch as a work of art. From the start of his career, to turning on Marty Jannetty, to being retired by the Undertaker. He feels like he has told a great story of heartbreak and triumph:

“I know I’m strange about this stuff, I get it. People say ‘its a business, it was your job’ and they are right but at the same time for me its something that I spent 25, almost 30 years painting and I looked at it and went ‘I like it just the way that it is’ and yeah, I could come back and do something and somebody might say : ‘If you would put this over here, I’d pay another million bucks for that’ But I can’t because for me I see it on the wall and it looks beautiful. And again, believe me that is so dumb, so silly, I know. But for me that’s the way I look at it and to mess with that is not something that I want to do”
