Changed Finishes At WWE Payback

The 2017 edition of Payback has officially come and gone. The event featured a lot of surprises, including Chris Jericho winning the United States Championship from Kevin Owens. Also, Alexa Bliss winning the RAW Women’s Championship after defeating Bayley.

There is some talk that some of the finishes at the event were changed at the last moment.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio on Sunday night (subscribe here), there were a few finishes changed on the day of the show.

The first mentioned was the match between Austin Aries and Neville for the Cruiserweight Championship. Neville was originally scheduled to win but WWE changed their minds and had Aries get the win by disqualification. This keeps the feud going between both guys moving forward.

The second mentioned was the match between Alexa Bliss and Bayley. The WWE are rumored to have flipped back and forth a few times with who would walk out as champion. WWE finally decided on Alexa winning after changing their minds several times. With the win, Alexa became the first-ever female to hold the RAW and Smackdown Women’s titles. She defeated Bayley, who was wrestling in front of her hometown crowd.

Our take – I can’t say that I am upset with Aries and Neville going on for much longer. I am a big fan of both guys and Neville winning again would have likely killed the feud.

As for Alexa winning, I thought it was a nice surprise. I would have bet that WWE was saving the first ever female to hold both titles honor for Charlotte.
