The 1988 Royal Rumble marked the debut of the legendary event that wrestling fans look forward to every year. The idea was pitched by Pat Patterson and they decided to try it out. Below we look back at the first-ever Royal Rumble and some of the key things that took place.

Bret Hart, Tito Santana, Butch Reed, Jim Neidhart, Jake Roberts, Harley Race, Jim Brunzell, Sam Houston, Dangerous Danny Davis, Boris Zhukov, Don Muraco, Nikolai Volkoff, Jim Duggan, Ron Bass, B. Brian Blair, Hillbilly Jim, Dino Bravo, The Ultimate Warrior, One Man Gang, Junkyard Dog.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan won the 1988 Royal Rumble match by last eliminating One Man Gang.
- Bret Hart lasted the longest at over 25 minutes in the match.
- Only Rumble match to have 20 participants.

Ricky Steamboat defeated Rick Rude by disqualification.
The Jumping Bomb Angels (Noriyo Tateno and Itsuki Yamazaki) defeated The Glamour Girls (Judy Martin and Leilani Kai)
- Two out of three falls match for the WWF Women’s Tag Team Championship .
The Islanders (Haku and Tama) defeated The Young Stallions (Paul Roma and Jim Powers)
- Two out of three falls match.
