The brand split so far has been a success for WWE. The viewership numbers for Smackdown Live have increased significantly while the numbers for RAW have remained comparable to last year. Both RAW and Smackdown Live possess their own unique rosters, feuds and titles.

The problem with a brand split is that eventually each brand is going to run out of feuds. There is eventually going to have to be pieces changing from brand to brand.

WWE has been teasing some roster changes over the past few weeks. During the fourth-quarter earnings call, Vince McMahon said WWE stars changing brands would be a way to keep things fresh. He specifically mentions Roman Reigns on Smackdown being considered a big deal. We also saw WWE tease 5 potential trades that they want to see between RAW and Smackdown.
There are rumors circulating currently that a 2017 WWE draft is going to happen. It is rumored to take place sometime in June. This will allow WWE to shuffle the deck completely and create many new matches and feuds between brands.

The draft also provides an easy way for WWE to call-up NXT talent to the main roster. Last year we saw 6 NXT talents get drafted (Finn Balor, Alexa Bliss, Carmella, Nia Jax, American Alpha and Mojo Rawley). All 6 have made solid impacts on their respective brands so far.
Expect to see a 2017 WWE draft after Wrestlemania 33 if these rumors turn out to be true.
