AJ Lee did some promotion for her book: ‘Crazy Is My Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules’. During a Q&A, she gave some details on her turning down a chance to be on Total Divas.

She says that the company wanted her to be on the show to replace JoJo as the “tiny girl”. She turned it down because she enjoys her privacy.
She also shared Vince McMahon’s reaction to her turning down the offer:
“I didn’t realize how offensive that would be [turning down the offer to do the show] and I think Vince McMahon got a kick out of that because people kind of jump at those opportunities and he was kind of fatherly towards me”
This eventually lead to AJ’s promo on RAW where she blasted the entire cast of Total Divas:
“He came up to me at Raw and was like ‘so you don’t wanna do the show?’ I said no and he’s like ‘ok well, tell us why today’ and that was it. They gave me a live mic and I guess nobody knew I was doing it”

She does mention that Vince was proud of her after the promo she cut and that Vince approved what she said. She also would go on to say that WWE offered her a choice of storylines for Total Divas. This gives you an indication of how scripted the show really is.
