As mentioned prior, WWE announced that Mickie James would be returning to face Asuka for the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT Takeover Toronto. Many fans were thrilled to hear that the former Women’s Champion would be wrestling another match with the company.
According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required but recommended), the original plan was for Asuka’s opponent to be Trish Stratus. This would have been a massive match in Trish’s hometown of Toronto.We had even seen Trish tease a return in a couple of interviews but nothing ended up coming from it.
The plan for Trish was nixed for obvious reasons after Trish announced that she was pregnant with her second child. The WWE found a pretty great replacement in Mickie James as many fans are hyped for her return.

Also, there is no information yet on if this is a one-off appearance for Mickie with the WWE or if she will be returning full-time to the company. I guess we will have to wait and see.
I am attending the show at NXT Takeover Toronto and am disappointed that a Trish Stratus return slipped through our fingers. Mickie James is an incredible replacement though so I can’t be too upset!
