The WWE Cruiserweight Classic was a big success. 32 of the best wrestlers in the world under 205 lbs performed in a unique environment in front of the WWE Universe. The tournament was heralded as a unanimous success as we saw plenty of awesome moments and matches. It looks like WWE could be looking to build upon that success with a WWE Women’s Tournament.

According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required but recommended), WWE is thinking about a tournament in similar fashion to the CWC but for the top female wrestlers in the world.
According to the report, the ball has begun rolling and some of the top females outside of WWE have been contacted about participation. It is said that it could happen sometime in early 2017.
It seems like a logical progression that WWE would do a Women’s tournament after how far women’s wrestling has come in the past year or so. There are plenty of talented women inside WWE and around the world that deserve to be showcased.
If a women’s tournament was successful, this would likely mean WWE would run 3 tournaments annually: The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, The Cruiserweight Classic and a women’s tournament.
