WWE recently announced the ‘Smackville’ event, which will be taking place on July 27th in Nashville. The event will be streamed on the WWE Network and will feature Kofi Kingston vs Samoa Joe vs Dolph Ziggler for the WWE Championship.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful has provided some more details on why WWE is running this event and why it was announced so late.
Here is a quote from Sapp on some of the reasons for the event:
One was the ability to counter program at the drop of a hat. With AEW coming along soon, WWE want to know that they’ll be able to effectively program content, have it look and run well on short notice. That being said, we were also told that isn’t necessarily a concern of theirs, as they rarely have issues. Other reasons included injuries and event cancellations that extend beyond WWE’s control, and them having the ability to run a show to adjust for those.
Sapp adds that we should expect to see WWE putting on shows against other promotions. That includes them recently airing the Evolve special during the AEW Fight For The Fallen event.
