John Cena Explains Why He Is Facing Roman Reigns At No Mercy Instead Of Wrestlemania

One of the biggest questions that fans have about the match between Roman Reigns and John Cena at No Mercy is: why wasn’t it saved until Wrestlemania? The match feels big enough that it could have been saved for the ‘Grandest Stage Of Them All’

Cena was a guest recently on E&C’s Pod of Awesomeness and was asked straight up by Edge why the match wasn’t saved until the bigger stage of Wrestlemania. Edge has said in the past that he feels like it should be a Wrestlemania match.

Cena gave two answers. The first was from a business perspective:

“In trying to find what a great consumer experience the [WWE] Network is, we are now at the challenge of consistently trying to give our consumer unbelievable matches all the time”

The second was Cena giving his personal reasons for the work he is doing outside WWE:

“I know personally, outside commitments for me doesn’t help anything. First of all I’m 40, not only just 40 but have been doing this on a televised, consistent level for 15 years.  I made a promise to myself that as soon as I get a step slow in there, I can’t justify performing for the audience because I don’t want to be that person. I am not saying I am there yet but I am saying I have had some talks with myself about that. There is a lot of stuff going on personally outside of WWE. I don’t know what else I could possibly do. So do you hold out for an event in April and sacrifice these other things that not only could be good for personal development but overall WWE development? I would say you take the opportunities and figure all the rest of the stuff out. That’s kind of my view from the office, I don’t know what my future holds, it’s a very uneasy time for me. Both from a health perspective and from a career perspective”

Cena also says that in the grand scheme of things, WWE is trying to let fans know that all year-long, big matches are happening on the WWE Network and on television.
