There was a recent report put out by the SportsBusiness Journal that analyzed the audience of major sports since 2000. The study looked at live, regular-season game coverage of major sports in 2000, 2006 and 2016.

One of the major sports that the study looked at was professional wrestling, It had the biggest change from 2000 to 2016 in regards to the age of the audience.
In 2000, the median age for a television viewer watching wrestling was 28. In 2016, that has jumped up to 56 according to the report.
So what does this mean? This is indicating that wrestling is not creating enough younger fans.
Dave Meltzer chimed in on the article saying he agrees with the premise that the median has risen. He thinks that the number is close to being in the 40’s than the 50’s:

Regardless of the number, this still indicates that wrestling is not doing great in the eyes of younger fans. WWE needs to do a much better job in creating interest in the product. If this number keeps rising, it can’t be good for the future of the company.
