Is NXT still must-see TV? – Opinion Piece

For most of 2015 until the summer of 2016, NXT Takeovers were always better than their main roster PPV counterparts. Takeover Dallas was better than ‘Mania, Takeover Brooklyn was better than SummerSlam two years in a row and the Takeovers that were shown before B Shows were a million times better.

However, after NXT Brooklyn II, the product has gone downhill. It’s not so much as a personal opinion but a fact. I honestly did not watch a single episode of NXT between Takeover Toronto and last week’s Takeover San Antonio and I knew all the storylines, I hadn’t missed anything and I didn’t seem left out of the fold.

As a result, you are no longer required to watch each weekly edition of the Network exclusive show. Now, is the wrestling still great? Yes. Are the stories still interesting? Yes. But is that spark gone? Definitely. I personally believe however that this is no fault of NXT’s. We all seem to forget sometimes that it’s prime reason for existing, its main overall focus, is to develop stars for the main roster. It’s developmental. Whenever they make a star; Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, American Alpha, Seth Rollins, Wyatt Family, Bayley, Sasha, Becky, Charlotte etc. they get called up to either Raw or Smackdown. So whenever a star has reached his/her pinnacle in developmental, up they go. This hurts the IWC’s beloved NXT, which I am firmly in the bracket of, but it’s more beneficial to the stars themselves.

Even with probably the worst hyped card in Takeover history, San Antonio was enjoyable. It wasn’t as good as the Royal Rumble but a lot of that was down to how fantastic that pay-per-view was. While NXT is currently not must-see TV, especially with now Corey Graves leaving, it will be soon. I honestly believe that. Nakamura, Bobby Rhoode, Roderick Strong, Tyler Bate as seen last night, Oney Lorcan, Ember Moon, Nikki Cross, Sanity…the names are endless that will make NXT great again. While the future may not be now…it’s going to be soon.

  1. they should have signed those fee agents that were available. namely, the young bucks, kenny omega and jay lethal. they still have time left to do what’s right and sign adam cole. nakamura can’t keep floating the ship, he needs to be brought up sooner rather than later.

everything I said can be scrapped if they have big stars waiting in the development wings. as it stands right now: nakamura, bobby roode, chris hero, roddy strong and the soon to be returning hideo itami are primed to lead the way. they still need more depth. I believe the tag-team division is strong, but can sorely use one more team to balance out the injury to TM61.
