Rumor Roundup: Vince McMahon’s New Favorite Superstar, WWE’s Back-Up Plan For Top RAW Feud, More

Here are some of the latest WWE rumors that are floating around.

5) The Original Plans For The Women’s Royal Rumble Winner

According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, Shayna Baszler was originally penciled in to win the Women’s Royal Rumble match this year.

WWE scrapped those plans at the last-minute and went with Charlotte Flair winning instead. Here is what Sapp wrote:

We’re told that there have been some major changes for Shayna Baszler this year. From the point she was called up to WWE Raw, she was penciled in to win the WWE Royal Rumble in January, before Charlotte Flair was decided on. However, we’re told that call was actually finalized just hours before the event actually happened.

My Take:

  • This goes back to the reports that Vince McMahon had soured on Shayna. That would explain why she was off WWE television for a few months. I think she is talented though and I hope that they build off her latest RAW appearance.

4) WWE’s Back-Up Plan For Top RAW Feud

You have likely heard the rumors that Rey Mysterio is currently working without an official contract from WWE. According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE had a back-up plan for Mysterio’s current feud with Seth Rollins, if Mysterio walked away after not re-signing.

The back-up plan was for Kevin Owens to step in and feud with Seth Rollins. Owens has been involved in the Rollins-Mysterio storyline over the past few weeks now and could have easily stepped in to face Rollins at Extreme Rules.

WWE and Mysterio have worked out some sort of deal as he will be facing Rollins in an ‘Eye for an Eye’ match at Extreme Rules. Owens was the back-up plan.

My Take:

  • This seems like a smart move by WWE. Owens vs Rollins would have been a solid match for Extreme Rules if they were forced to change their plans. We have seen that match before but they have some strong chemistry with one another.
