Speculation On The Number Of Participants In The Women’s Royal Rumble Match

Stephanie McMahon announced that WWE will be doing the first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble match next month. There has been a lot of excitement from fans after the match was announced. Now, we need to speculate on the logistics of how this match will work.

The current WWE Women’s roster has 21 names by our count: Alexa Bliss, Alicia Fox, Asuka, Bayley, Dana Brooke, Mandy Rose, Mickie James, Nia Jax, Paige, Sasha Banks, Sonya Deville, Becky Lynch, Carmella, Charlotte Flair, Lana, Liv Morgan, Naomi, Natalya, Ruby Riott, Sarah Logan and Tamina.

WWE confirmed in their press release that the winner will be getting a Women’s Title shot at Wrestlemania, similar to the men. As a result, it seems that Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair won’t be participating in the match. That brings us down to 19 Women if we take them out of the equation.  Here are some of WWE’s options:

  1. Charlotte faces Alexa in a Champion vs Champion match at the event.
  2. Charlotte and Alexa both don’t defend their titles at the event. The Women’s Rumble match is going to take up a decent chunk of the 4-hour show, meaning that there will be less room on the card.
  3. Charlotte and Alexa both defend their titles at the event. That would mean our number would move down from 19 to 17 if this is the case.

Now, there are three potential options that WWE could do in regards to the number of participants.

  1. 20 participants – This would be the likely case if WWE goes with Charlotte and Alexa defending their belts. WWE could add in a few returns or NXT call-ups to fill out the rest.
  2. 30 participants – This would be if WWE wants to do exactly what the Men’s match does. If this is the case, they would need to call up several females from NXT and have a bunch of returns to fill the match.
  3. 25 participants – The would be the middle ground of the scenarios above.

There is certainly a lot to think about. I am going to go with 30 participants with WWE using multiple call-ups and returns for one-off appearances. What about you?
