At Summerslam 2010, Team WWE defeated The Nexus in a 7 on 7 elimination match. The Nexus were white-hot as a faction at the time and many fans believe that it was the wrong decision having them lose. John Cena ended up defeating both Justin Gabriel and Wade Barrett to win the match. There has been a long-standing rumor that Cena used his backstage influence to change the finish.
Wade Barrett recently did a live show for ‘Inside The Ropes’ in the UK. He revealed some very interesting information about that match.
Barrett says the NEXUS were told a week prior that they were going to win the match. They showed up to the arena and were only told close to the start of the show that the finish was changed:
“We were pulled to one side and Arn Anderson says, ‘hey guys, here’s the finish.’…We get down to the final three which is myself and Justin Gabriel…against John Cena. And then we’re told ‘…and Cena’s going to beat you both and go over.’ At which point, I kind of thought he was joking just to gauge our reaction, and then we realized no he’s not joking. This is serious; John’s going over. Why is John going over, we really need to win this match? Arn puts his hands up and says nothing to do with me, you’ve gotta go and speak to Vince [McMahon] about this”
So they had a meeting with Vince backstage and pleaded their case for them to get the win. Vince’s response to them was:
“The reason we’re doing this is Summerslam needs to have a happy ending”
Barrett says he knew immediately that he was being lied to and it was a nonsense reply. He also says that he still believes it was the wrong decision.
