WWE Great Balls Of Fire – WWE Reportedly Had Copyright Issues

WWE announced the ‘Great Balls of Fire’ Pay-Per-View a few months ago. The event takes place on July 9th at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. The name has drawn the ire of wrestling fans and has been the subject to many jokes since being announced.

‘Great Balls of Fire’ was made famous by Jerry Lee Lewis and is a widely recognizable song.

It turns out that WWE had some copyright issues with the Pay-Per-View name.

Jerry the ‘King’ Lawler told the story on his podcast: Dinner With The King. Jerry Lawler shares the same attorney as Jerry Lee Lewis and says that the attorney spoke to WWE over copyright infringement (after the event was announced). Jerry Lee Lewis has had the phrase trademarked since the song came out.

WWE worked out a deal with Jerry Lee Lewis and are now able to use the song and the name for the show.

“I put him in touch with the WWE people and gave him a name. Apparently he called them and got everything worked out. Not only are they using the name, they are using Jerry Lee’s song, which is awesome”

As we saw this week, WWE released the first promotional video for the event and used the song.

WWE probably should have done some research before announcing the event but good to see they got a deal worked out.
