Original Plans For Finn Balor This Year That Were Scrapped

Finn Balor returned from injury on the RAW after Wrestlemania 33. Since returning, he has stuck around the midcard scene of WWE, only getting a chance at the Universal Title in the fatal 5-way match at Extreme Rules. Other than that, it has been a quiet return for the first-ever Universal Champion.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio (subscribe here), there were some big plans in place for Finn Balor earlier this year that never came to fruition.

Meltzer says that he knows Balor was at one point being groomed to face Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship.

He is unclear if WWE completely scrapped those plans or just pushed them back to a later Pay-Per-View in 2017 or 2018.

This would make sense. Several months ago Paul Heyman put over Balor very strong on RAW. This included calling him the best in-ring performer in WWE today during a promo segment between them.

It looks like Brock vs Balor was in fact the plan at some point. The key question is if Vince McMahon completely scrapped the match or is keeping it in his back pocket for later. We will have to see what happens over the next several weeks.
