Who The Undertaker Originally Wanted To Face At Wrestlemania 33

The Undertaker was defeated by Roman Reigns at Wrestlemania 33. This marked the second time that he had lost in his career at the event. It also appears to be the final match of the Undertaker, as seen by him leaving his gear in the middle of the ring after the match.

There is a rumor going around about who the Undertaker originally wanted to face at Wrestlemania but was ultimately rejected by Vince McMahon.

Rumors have it that the Deadman wanted to face John Cena at Wrestlemania, a match that has been heavily desired by fans for a number of years. The request was ultimately scrapped by Vince McMahon. So why was the Undertaker’s request denied?

According to Dave Meltzer, Vince wanted to plan for the long-term (vs Reigns) instead of the short-term payoff (vs Cena):

The idea would be that a match against Roman Reigns will do more for him and the WWE in the long-run than the match against Cena, who is already an established megastar. It sucks for fans that wanted to see the dream match but in the long-run, this will do more for the career of Reigns than it would for Cena.

Authors Note: Just because he asked to face Cena first, doesn’t mean that he necessarily disliked the match against Reigns. He probably just wanted the mega-match before he hung up the boots. Vince on the other hand was thinking long-term.
