WWE Summerslam 2011 Results, Review

We are winding down our series and I want to thank everyone for the feedback as well as sharing these. This Summerslam is headline by CM Punk and John Cena and I must say although I watched this live I completely forgot about this match. The Money in the Bank match and the Raw match are typically the matches most talked about between these two. To be honest the rest of the card doesn’t look too good however I’m keeping an open mind and I’m not coming off watching awful Summerslams right before this one. It looks like we are back to classic traditional of a tag match opening the show and its fairly start studded for this era.

The Miz, R-Truth & Alberto Del Rio v. Kofi Kingston, John Morrison & Rey Mysterio: I wonder how Miz feels from being in the main event at Wrestlemania to sliding all the way down to opening Summerslam in such a short amount of time. Also when Punk “left with the title” he and Mysterio were in the finals of that tournament to crown a new champion. We open this match with Kofi Kingston and Miz. I wrote last night that Kofi Kingston went from a fringe player to a part of a Hall of Fame tag team. The faces start the match hot and beating down the MIz who can sell a beat down well. I will say right now as they go back and forth Kofi’s offense is probably the thing I’ll remember most from this match. Cool sequence with a missed Trouble in Paradise into an attempted Skull Crushing Finale. Del Rio who is Mr. Money in the Bank finally checks in and right here I think was the best we ever saw Del Rio in WWE. He couldn’t fully pull off the “rich aristocrat” gimmick however never had a bad match, that I can think of. We get some pretty cool foreshadowing of the Awesome Truth double teaming Rey Mysterio. However the faces get the upper hand after Del Rio tries to get involved. Mysterio drops a dime on R Truth after Kofi hits a splash on Miz outside for the win. This was a fine match and all six guys did everything they could to get each other over.

Mark Henry vs. Sheamus: I’m actually stoked for this match. I think both of these guys are severely underrated all time. Both guys if I remember correctly were on such a hot streak, a roll if you will that this match should be good. This match starts as it should, with both men laying it into one another before ending up on the outside. Pure strength from Henry who press slams Sheamus back into the ring. Henry is really dominating this match and man you talk about a guy that could have been built up to a fun CM Punk feud. Sheamus breaks the bear hug and gets the baby face shine spot with a couple of double axe handles. The crowd is not into this as they are chanting “we want Ziggler” I think. Really awesome finish with Sheamus hitting the Brogue kick but Henry ends up outside the ring. Henry and Sheamus then go through the barricade like an explosion and we get a double count out victory. I typically want a finish however with these two and the story they were telling this works. Good match.

Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix (Divas Title Match): This match comes after Cee-Lo Green and the crowd was out to lunch at this point. Kelly Kelly comes out strong with no fear against the physically gifted Beth Phoenix. Things start to fall a apart a bit after a ugly looking flying head scissors. We get some action outside and now back into the ring. You know after the Henry/Sheamus match and the concert thing this is really dragging. Kelly Kelly hits Beth with everything she can using her generic move set number five from WWE2k18 (which you can enter a giveaway for, checkout my pinned tweet). Beth gets the upperhand however Kelly Kelly reverses the Glam Slam into a roll up for the win.

Daniel Bryan vs. Wade Barrett: This match is built around Bryan winning the briefcase however Barrett believing it should belong to him. Oh yeah and they were former Nexus members. We get some basic wrestling to open this match and man Bryan doesn’t even look like the same guy as now. We get a lot of back and forth and Bryan hits his signature drop kick in the corner early. Barrett catches Bryan in the winds of change for a near fall, I love that move. We get some awesome outside the ring action that spawns from a Wasteland attempt from the apron and Bryan reverses and drop kicks him instead. We get both men going back and forth with signatures and reverses and Bryan hits the Yes kicks. This match has been very good and they are working their ass off to make it work. Bryan locks in the Labelle Lock however Barrett reaches the ropes. Bryan gets crotched on the top rope which leads to a Wasteland and Barrett wins. Good match with both guys looking strong after. I will say three of the first four matches everyone has looked really good.

Randy Orton vs. Christian (World Title No DQ Match): Mr. WWE Title match is in yet another Summerslam WWE title match. Randy Orton OWNS WWE Title Matches it seems like. Christian starts this match with a pretty old school heel move with a thumb to the eye. Action is actually pretty quick for an Orton match. We also get an early mid rope DDT from Orton. I wonder if this is around the time people were over Orton. Someone help me out with this. Orton goes for an RKO on the announce table and that NEVER WORKS FOR HIM. Christian pushes him off and makes a run with the title. Orton catches Christian and the crowd starts chanting “Lets go Christian”. We start to get some weapons now and Christian jams a kendo stick into Orton’s throat. Christian hits a nice looking spine uster in this match. I’m not going to lie Christian looks out of place in this match against Orton. It’s not a bad match, hell its actually pretty good however Christian doesn’t feel like a main event guy. We the DDT spot reversed into a kill switch attempt which is reversed into a back breaker. These two are really delivering on this show. Really cool spot where a table is setup in the corner and Christian goes for a spear attempt and Orton leaps over him and goes for an RKO, however the RKO is reversed and Orton is sent outside. Back and forth finishers get traded after Christian mocks Orton’s pre finisher taunt. This match is REALLY GOOD. OUCH! Orton hits an awesome looking powerslam through the before mentioned table. Some great back and forth that leads to Christian trying a second rope springboard but gets caught by an RKO onto the steps for the win. Knowing what’s next I’m wondering how Cena and Punk will follow this.

CM Punk vs. John Cena (WWE Title Match): I can’t believe this show only has six matches and a shitty Cee-Lo green concert. HHH is the special guest referee for a WWE Title match with John Cena at Summerslam against an Indy Darling. Foreshadowing? The crowd is very hot for this match and it has a big fight feel to it. Early on we have both men feeling each other out and trying to get the upper hand and have I mentioned how hot the crowd is for this match? Some good early action and an early STF attempt is blocked. Fruity Pebbles is now being chanted by the crowd. This match is very fast paced right now and Punk hits his early knees in the corner. Awesome reversals from the koji clutch into Cena’s amazing looking STF. We then have Punk counter into the anaconda vice and Cena locks in the cross face. Ok both men brought their working pants tonight. Punk hits a suicide dive and both men are struggling to get back to the ring. HHH starts the count and is like NOPE no count outs and goes out to bring both men back into the ring. Both men get back to their feet and they are trading punches with each other. We get a five knuckle shuff and a mid-tope bulldog from Punk. The crowd is so into this as am I. Cena hits the AA and Punk kicks out then Punk hits the GTS and Cena kicks out. FALSE FINISHES FOR EVERYONE! Punk hits a flying elbow and gets into it with HHH he then hits a second GTS and wins but Cena’s foot is on the rope. After the match HHH offers a handshake but Punk refuses. HHH then raises his hand and leaves. Nash comes out of NO WHERE and his a Jacknife Power Bomb. THIS BRINGS OUT DEL RIO. Del Rio with the cash in and its OVER new champion.

Sneaky good Summerslam here folks. Not a lot of matches but I would say outside of the Diva’s match nothing was bad. The two title matches delivered and the rest of the men’s card looked good. This one is tough as both title matches were great however I’m going to go with Punk and Cena as the match of the night. They have and had tremendous chemistry and it’s a feud that I feel is highly underrated all time. Until next time be awesome.
