Roman Reigns vs John Cena is officially confirmed for the 2017 edition of the No Mercy Pay-Per-View. A lot of fans have expressed their displeasure with this match not being saved for Wrestlemania. While I personally feel like the match is deserving to be a Wrestlemania main event, I also think that there are some positive reasons why WWE is doing it now. We tried to take a positive approach to the match and why it is a good idea that it is happening now.

Reason 1: It Helps Elevate ‘B’ Pay-Per-Views Like No Mercy

One reason why it is a good idea for WWE to do Cena vs Reigns at No Mercy is because it elevates the Pay-Per-View instantly.

In WWE there are ‘A’ and ‘B’ level Pay-Per-Views. In the ‘A’ group would be Wrestlemania, Summerslam, Survivor Series and the Royal Rumble (I would also include Money in the Bank in this group personally). These are considered the biggest shows of the year and have the most anticipation. The rest of the Pay-Per-Views are usually looked at as ‘B’ level. The shows don’t have as much hype as the bigger events but are usually half-decent.

With Reigns vs Cena and Braun Strowman vs Brock Lesnar already announced, No Mercy is a can’t miss event based on only 2 matches. Sometimes these Pay-Per-Views can feel like WWE is just passing time before building to the bigger shows. I don’t think it is a bad thing that a WWE event in September could be one of the biggest of the year.

If the card featured some mediocre matches instead, fans would complain about the event being boring or not being worth watching. Now that the card features Wrestlemania-quality matches, fans are saying that it should have been saved for a bigger show. Seems like WWE can’t win when booking matches.

Like it or not, Roman Reigns vs John Cena elevates this Pay-Per-View.

Reason #2: Nothing Is Guaranteed In WWE

Another reason why it isn’t the worst idea in the world to do Reigns vs Cena now…. Nothing is guaranteed in WWE (or professional wrestling in general).

They could plan this match for Wrestlemania 34 or 35, but you never know what will happen. What if one of these two get injured and the plans have to be scrapped? What if another angle involving Cena or Reigns gets white-hot and WWE goes in a different direction?

We also don’t really know about John Cena’s future in Hollywood. He seems to be adding a new major film project every week. Cena says that he doesn’t want to be a part-timer but it could be hard for him to deny the lure of Hollywood after so many big offers get tossed his way. How many more years does Cena have left? He could stick around for the next 5 or he could be finished next year. WWE has been giving away a lot of Cena matches lately that could be saved for bigger shows (Shinsuke Nakamura, Jinder Mahal and the rumored match against Samoa Joe come to mind). Could this be a hint that Cena is hanging up the boots soon?

The point is, you never really know in wrestling.

This might be the only chance that we ever get to see Cena vs Reigns happen. I would rather have it happen at No Mercy than never at all due to various circumstances.
