Backstage Notes About The Controversial Finish Of Hell In A Cell

Fans aren’t happy after the 2019 Hell in a Cell PPV. This came after the Hell in a Cell match between Seth Rollins and Bray Wyatt ended in a non-finish. Fans chanted “refund” and “AEW” to close the show.

We have a few backstage notes to pass your way about the finish of the match.

According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider, the idea behind the finish was so it would be considered a referee stoppage, not a disqualification. Here is what Johnson wrote:

The idea behind the Seth Rollins vs. Bray Wyatt finish was that the referee officially stopped the match after Rollins smashed Wyatt with a sledgehammer as he lay under a pile of weapons.

While it was certainly plausible why someone would think the match ended with Rollins disqualified, we are told the official idea is that the bout was stopped.

This is in line with what is written on WWE’s website about the finish. WWE is wording it to say the match ended in a referee stoppage, not a disqualification:

Clearly sensing that a line was about to be crossed, the referee tried to stop Rollins from using the hammer. But The Beastslayer did it anyway, bringing the hammer straight down on the whole pile, causing the ref to wave off the match while a crew of medics tended to Wyatt.

Either way, it was confusing and fans left unhappy.
