Dean Ambrose – Former WWE Writer Reveals (Rejected) Pitch For His Main Roster Debut That Was Rejected

Former WWE writer: Kevin Eck wrote an article for PressBoxOnline.com and it was interesting to say the least. Eck worked for WWE on the creative team from 2011 until 2014. As you can imagine, he has some great stories of some ideas that never came to light on WWE television.

One of these ideas, came from him and was his way to try to get Dean Ambrose on WWE’s main roster. This was obviously before the Shield made their debut at Survivor Series in 2012.

The premise of the idea, is what he called titled: “Dean Ambrose And AJ Lee Hook Up In A Mental Institution”.

During AJ Lee’s storyline with Daniel Bryan, he wanted her to actually go to a mental institution. During her stay, she would meet Dean Ambrose. Here is the pitch from Eck’s point of view:

“Meanwhile, the creative team was looking for a Plan B to bring Ambrose from developmental to the main roster. Plan A — a “worked-shoot” angle with Ambrose and Mick Foley engaging in a war of words on social media — was scrapped after Foley legitimately took issue with something Ambrose said about him.

My idea was for Bryan’s plan to have AJ committed [to a mental institution] actually succeed. We’d take her off TV for a little while before bringing her back in dramatic fashion. She would return with her new boyfriend (Ambrose), whom she had met while both were patients in the institution.

Ambrose and AJ would wreak havoc, becoming WWE’s version of Bonnie and Clyde (or Mickey and Mallory, to use a less-dated analogy).

This pitch was ultimately rejected by Vince McMahon who made AJ the RAW General Manager instead. We have to wonder how changed the landscape of WWE would have been if this is how Ambrose made his debut.

  1. Sounds interesting. Why can’t they still do this with others?
Sounds like some decent creative for a change.
