Kickoff Show:
Mojo Rawley vs Curt Hawkins
Result: Mojo wins via pinfall
Grade: C-
Thoughts: I mean…does anyone care? This had no story, no point and the result means nothing. The action was fine but nothing exciting. It’s honestly sad to see what WWE have done with the talent that is Curt Hawkins and, after his appearances on Talking Smack, Mojo deserves better than this, at least slightly. While the match wasn’t great- I honestly hope both guys move up the card or at least into matches with some meaning.
Main Show:
Becky Lynch vs Mickie James
Result: Becky wins with a quick pin
Grade: B
Thoughts: Well that was a bloody lovely start to the show wasn’t it?! Absolutely brilliant in ring work, great story telling with Mickie focusing on Becky’s left arm and a complete surprise for a finish. Mickie showed in Toronto that she’s lost none of her ability from years prior and her connection with the crowd is clearly still there. The only minor complaint is that I just can’t buy into James as a heel. Her entrance music, the way she talks, the way she wrestles, she’s just far too likable. Becky won. I love Becky Lynch so, while I was surprised, I was delighted! Eager to see any bouts they have in the future.
Apollo Crews & Kalisto vs Dolph Ziggler
Result: Apollo and Kalisto win via pinfall after Crews’ hits the spin-out powerbomb
Grade: C+
Thoughts: The concept of this match was really weird. The heel has to overcome the odds and face off against two guys at the same time? A strange way to get heat for Dolph. However, the opening was booked excellently. Ziggler looked genuinely evil after taking Kalisto out and breaking the LED boards before the match even began. The match itself was decent but we’ve seen it multiple times over the past few weeks. However- Kalisto ruined it. He completely no-sold all the injuries he sustained and acted like nothing was wrong at all. The beat down after the match was different as Dolph targeted Apollo’s foot and the crowd was very into it. Lovely.
Tag Team Turmoil Title Match- American Alpha Vs The Ascension vs Breezeango vs Usos vs Slater and Rhyno vs Vaudevillains
Result: American Alpha Retain through Grand Amplitude on Konnor
Grade: B-
Thoughts: Well this was just mental!! It’s hard to comment on the wrestling because of the plethora of teams on show but overall it was really solid. The match created multiple stories; The Uso’s attacking American Alpha after they were eliminated, Slater and Rhyno getting through multiple opponents before ultimately falling and how absolutely magnificent and beautiful Breezango is. The ending completely killed the Ascension however. It’s obvious they aren’t exactly at the top of the division but they couldn’t even put away a team who had been through multiple matches and a completely savage beat down. It totally buries them but simultaneously makes AA look like warriors. One negative point; it’s really sad to see AA get almost no reaction on the main roster. They’re amazing. Also…#NoFlipsJustFists…where are you?!
Nikki Bella vs Natalya
Result: Double count-out
Grade: D
Thoughts: I HATE this feud. It’s the level of story that WWE has been trying to erase over the past year with the woman’s revolution but…god it’s bad. Soap opera style insults over whether or not a man will marry one of the participants whereas the other is a charisma black hole with nothing interesting going for her at all. The story was clearly that Nikki was pulling out ‘proper’ wrestling moves but if that’s the entire story of a wrestling match- you’ve messed up. It shouldn’t be a surprise that the longest reigning Diva’s Champion can wrestle. The double count-out is the cherry on the terrible cake- it’s a boring, cop-out of a finish that helps neither competitor. The post-match beat down was…fine but with the crowd booing the finish- it’s never a good sign. I get that I’m being overly negative but I honestly find this the worst feud on the blue brand. The quicker this ends, the happier I’ll be.
