Rumor Roundup: WWE Locker Room Surprised By NXT Release, Possible Free Agent Signing, More

3) Backstage Note On Velveteen Dream

According to Sean Ross Sapp on Fightful Select (subscribe here), there was some concern among talent that WWE was setting up Velveteen Dream to become a coach at the WWE Performance Center. This was prior to his release from the company.

Here is what Sapp wrote:

He had been coming to open ring, and there was growing concern in the company he was being set up to help coach classes.

My Take:

  • Seems like a lot of the locker room were not the biggest fans of Dream.

2) Backstage Note On Drake Wuertz’s Release

According to Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there were some people in NXT who didn’t want Drake Wuertz to referee their matches. This was prior to his release from WWE.

Here is what Meltzer wrote:

There were issues as some talent didn’t want to get in the ring with him as referee because he refused to get vaccinated. He was in the news when they were putting together new rings and he and others didn’t wear masks and there was a COVID outbreak a few days later in NXT that impacted a lot of segments on TV the next two weeks.

My Take:

  • I think it is easier to get rid of a single referee than several members of the locker room.
