Speculation On The Handicap Match At The Royal Rumble

On Smackdown Live this week, it was announced that the Royal Rumble will feature a handicap match for the WWE Title. AJ Styles will defend his belt against both Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. This came after both Zayn and Owens picked up wins against Styles over the past few weeks.

After Smackdown Live, we had some immediate thoughts on what could potentially happen over the next few weeks leading to the match. Let’s speculate!

I have two ideas for what will happen. Both involve it not actually turning out to be a handicap match.

Part 1) Shane McMahon will change it from a handicap match to a triple threat. This will be a small way to continue the tension between him and Daniel Bryan. It will also add a bit of tension between Zayn and Owens. Since Shane is commissioner, I really doubt that he will let the handicap stipulation stick around.

Part 2) Taking this a little bit further, I still think that Shane McMahon ends up in this match, turning it into a fatal 4-way. If you are a follower of mine, you know that I predicted this to happen last week. After Smackdown this week, I am still convinced that it will happen. Shane put his hands on Owens this week, which could be a tease for his inclusion in the match. It would also make sense for Shane to want to enter the match to even the odds for Styles (since he hates Owens and Zayn). Shane inserting himself into a WWE Title match would lead to further tension with Daniel and add to the storyline that Shane has been acting like a tyrant.
