WWE Rumor: Plans For The Cruiserweight Championship At Wrestlemania 33

The WWE Cruiserweight Championship was established in the summer of 2016, as the prize for the winner of the Cruiserweight Classic tournament. Since TJ Perkins became the inaugural winner the title has changed hands a few times with Neville currently holding the belt.

We posted prior about the rumored card for Wrestlemania 33 (see here) but that had no mention of the Cruiserweight’s and their potential role at the event. So what is the plan for them? Will they even get a match on the card?

In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscribe here), it is briefly mentioned that WWE is discussing a match between Neville and Austin Aries for the title at Wrestlemania.

Aries has been working commentary for the RAW Cruiserweight division and 205 Live as he recovers from a fractured orbital bone. Aries was injured in a match against Shinsuke Nakamura back in late October.

Aries has been given some increased time on camera over the past few weeks, doing in-ring interviews. It can be speculated that this will lead to an in-ring return in the near future.

Our take: I think that would be a smart decision to book towards. Aries and Neville are arguably the two biggest stars in the division . I personally thought WWE was going to book the Cruiserweight division in some sort of multi person match at the event. I think I would prefer Aries vs Neville.
