Change To The WWE Universal Title Match At The Royal Rumble

If the wrestling rumor mill is anything to go by, we only have two matches left for Brock Lesnar as WWE Universal Champion. Roman Reigns vs Lesnar has been rumored for months for the main event of Wrestlemania 34. that still seems to be the direction that we are heading. The question is, who will Brock defend his title against at the Royal Rumble?

Rumors have suggested over the past month or two that WWE could be building up Finn Balor for that match and doing ‘The Beast vs the Demon’.

The Details

According to Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio (subscribe here), the original plan was indeed for it to be Brock Lesnar vs Finn Balor for the Universal Championship at the Rumble. Unfortunately for fans who want to see that match, Vince has changed his mind.

Meltzer says that the official change was made by Vince on Monday morning. Vince decided that Balor “isn’t over enough” for a match against Brock.

As we saw on RAW this week, Balor was choked out by Samoa Joe. WWE also booked Balor to lose to Kane a few weeks back.

The plans for Brock & the Rumble are now up in the air. Meltzer notes that Brock vs Braun Strowman likely won’t be the match. This is because they don’t want to have Strowman suffer a second loss to Lesnar. Should be interesting to see the direction that WWE decides to go.

  1. Why do we need a title match anyways? We know Brock is winning regardless. Just make the rumble a 40 man and have Brock in it.
The rumble match itself is the draw and exciting element of the show.
