Backstage Details On WWE’s Plans For Brock Lesnar at the Royal Rumble

Monday Night RAW this week was supposed to determine Brock Lesnar’s challenger for the Universal Title at the Royal Rumble. The match between Kane and Braun Strowman ended in a double count-out, leaving us with no definitive winner and challenger for Brock.

You likely have pieced it together already, or have read some of the reports circulating that this will leading to a triple threat at the Rumble: Kane vs Brock vs Braun. Here are some more details on the decision to make it a triple threat.

According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscribe here), there was originally a big push behind the scenes for another singles match between Brock and Braun.

Vince McMahon ended up nixing the idea because he doesn’t feel like it is the right time to have Strowman take another loss. Brock is still scheduled to face Roman Reigns for the Universal Title at Wrestlemania and will be retaining the title at the Rumble.

Kane being included in the match provides WWE with a way to have both Braun and Brock avoid taking a loss. In this case, Brock will likely be pinning Kane in the triple threat to retain his title.

Meltzer says that Vince made the decision for the triple threat two weeks ago and it will likely be made official soon.

For anybody wondering about Finn Balor, Meltzer says that Vince scrapped a potential Finn vs Brock match on the day after Survivor Series. Vince feels like Finn isn’t “over” enough to have a match against Brock. Balor has been joking about not being over on Twitter for the past few weeks.
