Real WWE Fights That Happened Backstage

2) Bret Hart vs Vince McMahon

Most fans are likely familiar with the ‘Montreal Screwjob’ that occurred at Survivor Series ’97. What you might not know is what happened backstage after the event. As the story goes, Bret Hart clocked Vince McMahon. Here is what happened.

After the screwjob happened, Vince McMahon went to Hart’s dressing room to apologize and explain himself. Hart warned Vince that if he didn’t leave, things would get violent. Vince McMahon stayed and reportedly took a big shot from Bret, leaving him with a black eye.

Here is what Bret said in an interview with Sports Illustrated:

“I got a good grip in with my left hand, I think everyone in the room – including Vince – was expecting me to throw an overhand punch. That would be my one shot, but then a bunch of guys would grab my arm, they’d grab Vince, and then we’d have a little pull-apart like they do in wrestling. It would end with me yelling at Vince, calling him a bunch of names, and Vince would have left having backed me down. I knew as we grabbed each other that this was not going to be a long scuffle. Everyone in the room was ready to pounce on us. No one in the room wanted to see us fight”

Vince Gets Knocked Out:

“It was the most beautiful uppercut punch you could ever imagine. I actually thought it would miss and go right up the side of his head, but I popped him right up like a cork was under his jaw and lifted him right off the hand. I broke my right hand just beneath the knuckle, and knocked Vince out cold. He thought he would come out of that OK, but he didn’t plan on an upper cut. They dragged Vince out of the room and it was pretty much done” (Source: Sports Illustrated).

At least the Hitman got a bit of revenge..

1) Chris Jericho vs Goldberg.

One of the most legendary backstage fights that have happened in WWE is Chris Jericho and Goldberg. You would think that based on their size alone, Goldberg would squash Jericho in a real-life fight…. According to reports, guess again.

Jericho and Goldberg had issues with each other stemming from their time together in WCW. One night when they were both in WWE, things came to a boiling point. As the story goes, Jericho got the best of Goldberg on that night and earned a ton of respect in the locker room for not backing down to the much larger man.

Here is what Jericho said on an appearance on the Roman Show (downplaying it a bit):

“Goldberg and I saw wrestling from both sides of a different coin. But both of us were very successful. There wasn’t a lot of interest on his end to work with me in WCW. There was a little animosity between us that transferred to the WWE. We had a scuffle it wasn’t what everyone says where Jericho took him down and tied him in a knot. I stood up for myself and held my ground. It was what it was. It was unfortunate for Bill, it was on his first day, so he kind of got labeled right off the ba”.

Will There Ever Be A Rematch?

“If you want to score it, OK, Jericho – 1, Goldberg – 0. There will never be a rematch, ever. If it ever happens, I’ll run away screaming because… I’m not going to say I got lucky, but I’m glad the outcome was the way it was because I thought he was going to tear my head off. Bill’s a good guy man, I have nothing but love for him, nothing but respect” (Source: The Roman Show).

Jericho also reportedly went nose to nose with Brock Lesnar backstage… One thing is for sure, Jericho has a lot of heart.
